The Keel Water Source Heat Pump

Project: Water Source Heat Pump

Market: Residential

Location: The Keel, Queens Dock, Liverpool

The Challenge

Barings as the client and owner of The Keel aimed to decarbonise heating of the building, which is a fully-let residential building.

The Solution

The Keel building sits within Liverpool’s docks and the feasibility of utilising a water source heat pump was investigated.  Following positive models and instruction from Barings, Low Carbon Alliance worked with Canal & Rivers Trust to use the latent energy present within the canals’ water to meet the heating demand for the entire Keel building.

For risk management, LCA recommended a contractor with known safety and delivery reliability.  ISO Energy was selected to design and install the water source heat pump.  The aim was to install 999kWth of installed capacity to replace 8 gas-fired boilers.

Barings intended to use the RHI, which initially had a deadline of March 2022 and was later extended to March 2023.

This project is ongoing and will be completed by the March 2023 RHI deadline.
