Decarbonisation Surveys for 12 Royal Borough Schools

Project: School Energy Surveys

Market:  Royal Borough Estate

Location: Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead

The Challenge

Low Carbon Alliance was appointed to undertake a comprehensive energy review of 12 schools in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead’s jurisdiction.

The requirement was to establish the feasibility of interventions to decarbonise the schools and corporate buildings in the Royal Borough estate, to meet the criteria of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme grant application process.

The Solution

We undertook the data collection and calculations relating to energy consumption and cost to the Royal Borough of these sites currently. We then sought to provide estimated savings to the Royal Borough with the implementation of a number of renewable measures, namely:

  • the replacement of heating and domestic hot water systems with ground source heat pumps (GSHP),
  • projected costs and savings for remotely controlled Building Energy Management System (BEMS), and
  • the impact of a photo-voltaic system on the yield, cost and savings for the GSHP.

We undertook calculations in compliance with the scheme administrator, Salix’s, specific requirements.

The decision was made to create a custom-built reporting tool to ensure that all data we collected was seamlessly transferred by the council to the Salix application. This proved effective and has helped the council secure grant funding for deployment.
