The Clean Energy Transition: Unstoppable Momentum from London’s Energy Security Summit
Last week, the Summit on the Future of Energy Security brought together representatives from 60 governments and leaders from over 50 major energy companies, alongside international institutions, and civil society organisations. Co-hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the UK Government, this landmark two-day event tackled one of the world’s most urgent challenges: securing energy systems now and for the future.
Despite global divisions, the summit delivered a powerful message: the shift to clean energy is no longer a question of if—it’s a matter of how fast.
UK Leadership in the Spotlight
Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband made bold commitments to accelerate the push to net zero. Starmer announced an initial £300 million investment through Great British Energy to boost offshore wind supply chains, create domestic jobs, and secure manufacturing facilities for critical clean energy infrastructure. This pro-investment strategy underscores the UK’s determination to lead the way in renewable energy innovation and economic growth.
Global Confidence in the Transition
The summit also highlighted the economic momentum behind clean energy, with nearly $43 billion in global investment flowing into the sector since last July. This surge reflects growing confidence in the opportunities tied to the clean energy transition. Furthermore, a global polling report revealed that 97% of business executives across 15 countries now support a rapid shift to renewable power, underscoring the widespread belief in its economic potential.
A Mixed International Landscape
While the absence of unified leadership from the US raised concerns, the summit showcased Europe’s unwavering commitment to decarbonisation and net zero strategies. Nations rallied around the opportunity to transform energy systems into drivers of security, economic growth, and climate resilience.
At the same time, the summit highlighted the risks of delaying the transition, with many leaders stressing the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for long-term energy stability. More than 130 businesses and industry associations issued a collective call, urging governments worldwide to prioritise renewables, grid infrastructure, storage, and efficiency in their national energy plans.
